Our bodies are roughly 60% water so drinking enough h2o is absolutely essential if you want your body to function at the best of its ability. However, for better performance in the gym, better results and healthier skin your water intake should be between 3-5 litres of water per day (depending on whether you’re male or female).
What happens if you don’t drink enough water?
When you don’t drink enough water, your body starts to become dehydrated. This can then lead to symptoms including headaches, dry mouth, chapped lips, and a complete lack of energy. All of these are signs that your body is trying to conserve the little water you have given it. What’s more, your performance in the gym could be massively affected if you don’t drink enough water.
The benefits of drinking enough water
Getting the right water intake means that you’ll be maintaining your body’s fluid balance. This is important to help your body transport nutrients, regulate your body temperature, digest food, and more.
Boosts your immune system
As well as helping you stay hydrated, water can help with decongestion and work to help your body fight back when you’re feeling under the weather. Aching joints and muscles can occur when you’re dehydrated, so prevent this by getting your daily dose.
Promotes clearer skin
Certain toxins present in the body can cause your skin to inflame, leading to clogged pores and acne. No one wants to combat bad skin, so by increasing your water intake, you can naturally flush out these toxins and watch your skin shine.
Helps your digestion
Digestion issues can be a nightmare but drinking enough water adds fluids to the colon, which helps your body work the way it should be.
Maximises your physical performance
If you don’t stay hydrated, your physical performance will start to suffer. This is particularly important when you’re exercising. When you sweat, you lose around 6-10% of your water. This can lead to altered body temperature, reduced motivation and tiredness, making exercise feel much more difficult.
To keep yourself hydrated, first thing in the morning you must rehydrate yourself. After that, get in the habit of keeping a water bottle with you at all times. Before you know it, you’ll start to feel the benefits of h2o.
